Workshop! How to Make a Simple Flag Book (Sunday)
Sunday afternoon workshop, May 31
Spend a Sunday afternoon at the Art Center and create a simple flag book using the accordion fold. Learn how to make this basic structure and then incorporate images; ephemera; personal notes or drawings; memorabilia; or any 2 dimensional matter to embellish a book unique to you.
All the paper and card to make the book form will be supplied. The studio will supply ample scissors, straight edge and rulers, pencils, and glue sticks, but if you have your own preferred tools, please bring them.
Also if you have them, please bring:
bone folder
xacto knife
cutting mat
(I will not have enough for everybody to use these tools simultaneously, so if you have these 3 items, please plan to bring them.)
If you wish to decorate your flag book, bring any kind of scraps for collage, colored pencils or anything you would like to use to decorate the pages and covers of the book.
These simple materials and your imagination are all that is needed to open worlds of possibility in this hand made book form!
Artist’s statement: Exploring Handmade Artist Books
“I have been working with paper, mainly handmade paper, for the last 30 years. Throughout this time, my focus has been on creating three-dimensional objects and installations, allowing the unique qualities of handmade paper to shape the form and character of each piece.
Fifteen years ago, I began creating artist books. This medium opened up an incredible array of design and construction possibilities, enabling me to experiment with various methods tailored to my own vision. The range extends beyond traditional binding and stitching techniques to include innovative uses of folding.
Among these techniques, the accordion fold stands out as the most adaptable. It forms the foundation of the flag book, providing a flexible structure that supports a variety of artistic expressions within the artist book format.” -Pam Cooper
